# Should 8.90 be 9.0 when released?

Folks,
Recently a user @tirons suggested that major API changes should occur as a major release.
The current version in HEAD is 8.90. I assume that is just a holder for the next release. Should the next release be 9.0. The new VTKModule API is a drastic change to how VTK handles modules. Also, I believe there will be changes to the Shader API.

My vote (which doesn’t count for much), would be to roll the version to 9.0 on the major API changes, too.

I think it should be 9.0 since there look to be a lot of API changes coming hrough.
