In 7.0 OpenGL2 became the default. In 8.2 OpenGL(1) was removed. The VTK superbuild project was last used for 7.1.1 as I recall so I would expect it not to work out of the box with OpenGL2 or 8.X.
We are starting to make plans for the future with the renewed NIH VTK Maintenance grant (thank you NIH!). Nothing is final yet but these are likely to include formalizing what we’ve done before for pip, debian and hopefully SDK packages (so Python and C++ first) via the new cmake infrastructure and rolling them into the regression testing and release processes to make them sustainable.
