There is even a comment “Only ~50% of devices support this extension”.
hello @domibel, first note that more devices support it now, it was added at an early stage when we added webgpu support in VTK, AFAIK it was only used by the point cloud mapper as suggested and the second option for the HDR environmnent.
Currently, I think the device initialization will failed if it doesn’t fit these extensions, maybe we should warn instead and add some safeguard in these mappers, wdyt @sankhesh @jaswantp ?
I double checked and this extension BGRA8UnormStorage is supported by the vast majority of system.
This is also the case for the Float32FIlterable extension : float32-filterable WebGPU support by browser and device | Web3D Survey
That’s said, @sankhesh currently see to make it optional, see https://gitlab.kitware.com/vtk/vtk/-/merge_requests/13853
That’s right, and apologies for not responding here sooner. My merge request introduces a mechanism for requesting and using optional features provided by the WebGPU implementation, and these two seem like good initial candidates. Thank you for raising the question.
Thank you. That works work for me. It renders after applying a tiny patch to your MR.
