VTK and the Steam Frame

So a quick update on some VR endeavours, I bought a Steam Frame VR headset and managed to install VS Code, Git, clone my VR sandbox repository from the previous thread and run a test Python script directly on the headset with no additional computer. The Python wheel I used (9.7.1) doesn’t seem to have the VTKOpenXR modules, but OpenGL rendering seems to work fine and I can run the standard flatscreen natively on the headset with no streaming from a standard PC.

So from the previous VR thread I can confirm to @LucasGandel that OpenGL support is working fine natively on the Steam Frame, I needed to export an environmental variable to declare the virtual display using export DISPLAY=:0 but that was pretty straightforward.

If someone can provide a build guide for how to build the VTKOpenXR module for a Linux-based OS running on ARM I’d be happy to test out the capabilities, develop the controller JSON mapping and provide some material for a blog post if needed.

As a small update to this post I’ve been able to compile the Linux version of VTK with OpenXR support, running the Python code by itself isn’t sufficient to get the code to launch in VR, it needs to be run by the Valve Devkit Client which handles injecting the VR runtime. The demos shown in my previous post seem to run okay natively on the headset, though I’ll be looking to improve their performance before properly using them.

I’ll produce a proper write-up of the steps to get all this running soon, the Steam Frame is still very early in its release cycle and so things may change.
